Picture Time

The past few couple of weeks have been busy ones for me, so rather than just ramble on about what I've been up to, I decided to just post some pictures. Hope you enjoy them!

These first photos are from Philadelphia. I spent 6 days there for the National Physician Assistant Conference. It was interesting for the most part. I learned a few things and got to hangout with Alicia (see previous post) and her husband. I also got to see one of my friends from college who is in his last semester of PA school. I took most of these as I walked the 9 blocks to and from the conference center every day.The Skyline

*Warning* If you have a weak stomach, scroll past this next photo quickly!Alicia and I took a procedure class and one of the stations involved doing lumbar punctures (spinal taps), which we practiced on chickens. Supposedly it's just like doing one on an infant. The first two chickens that came out of the cooler had "feet" but no head, but the third one as you can see from the photo, certainly did! The doctor that pulled it out was like "wow this is too much, we can't use this one, we have to put it back in the cooler". It was after all 9am and this isn't exactly what you want to see at that time of the day! Of course, later the chicken again emerged from the cooler for her photo op. It's kind of one of those things you know you probably shouldn't take a picture of, but you just can't miss out on a prime opportunity.

When I left Philly, I flew back to Nashville to meet up with Valerie, Leah, and Jennifer for our second annual trip to the lake. We spent the weekend catching up, relaxing, riding around in the boat, and catching some rays. It was great to hang out with the girls and just enjoy being together. These are just a few of the many photos that we took.

Weekend Adventures

I had a fabulous 4 day weekend, which made going back to work yesterday even harder than normal. Thursday evening I drove to Johnson City, had dinner with the family, and quickly got caught up on the latest news around town. Friday morning I got up at 5:30 (I can't remember the last time I got up that early!) to fly out of the TRI airport to Richmond, VA to visit my best friend and college roomie. I found tickets for way cheaper than the cost of gas and plus I love to fly! I hadn't seen Alicia since September 2005, when I was in her wedding.

We have stayed in touch through e-mail and phone calls, but nothing beats a visit. From the minute she picked me up from the airport, we talked nonstop the whole weekend. It was like we just saw each other last week. I am truely blessed to have her as a friend. In the three years that we lived together, we never once had a fight. We get each other in a way that it hard to put into words. I had a wonderful time, and we vowed that we would try and be better about visiting. I was very sad to say goodbye Sunday afternoon. However, I will get to see her next week because we are both going to Philly for the National Physician Assistant Conference. We didn't realize we were both going when we planned our weekend visit, so we are getting two visits back to back!

I had left my car at my parents house while I was gone, and I returned on Sunday night to find that some stupid punks had taken a baseball bat and smashed my passenger side mirror. Why do people have to do things like that?!?!?! I was so mad. They broke the glass, the plastic cover, and the wire that supplies the motor was cut (my mirrors fold in completely to the side of the car, so that all has to be replaced.) Plus they put a nice scratch all down the side of the car. They also busted the mirror on another one of our cars.
I have pictures I will add to this post later, but for now I have to get ready for work.
Only one more day this week and then I am off for 12 days!!!!!!!!!
A post with out a picture of Kaley just wouldn't be complete. She's just so darn cute, I had to put one in of her. I took this one right before I left on Monday morning to Drive back to Chattanooga. And for all of you who keep up with my personal life and are curious about Jason, here's a picture I took of us the other day while we were hanging out.

Full Moon

It really is true what they say about things in the ER being worse when it's a full moon. At least it was tonight. The afternoon was great, just a few easy patients and a good staff. Then at about 7:30 the flood gates opened and all hell broke loose. At one point 17 people signed in within 30 minutes. That has to be some kind of record! To make matters worse, we were short staffed. It was all a bunch of nonsense crap too. I did stitch up this really awesome lip laceration though; it was the highlight of my night. Yeah I know, I'm twisted.
I still have 3 shifts to go this week too. I have the weekend off and my sisters are coming to visit, so that will be fun. I can't really complain about having to work 4 days in a row though, because I did it to myself. It was worth it have Saturday and Sunday off. My boyfriend's birthday (yes you did read that right) was Saturday so we went out to dinner, saw a movie, and hung out downtown with some of his friends. If you haven't seen Blades of Glory and are in need of a laugh, I highly recommend it. I laughed so hard! Sunday we spent the day out on the lake. It was so nice. I am so ready for summer and warm weather. I'm a lovely shade of pink after 6 hours in the sun! Not too bad though, and I did wear sunscreen.

Easter Photos

Hope everyone had a great Easter, I know I did. It was nice to hang out with th family and see everyone. I also got to see 2 of my best friends that I didn't know were going to be intown until the last minute. Surprises like that are always welcomed. We managed to take a family for the first time in forever (thanks Chip), so I decided I'd post it for all to behold. Seriously I can't remember the last time all 7 of us (well 8 with Kaley) had our picture taken. It's been at least 3 years because Kaley wasn't in the last one.

It was quite cold at home and it even snowed on Saturday. (yes you did read that right, it says snow!) It's April and I'm ready for spring and summer. 2 weekends ago I was out on the lake in my bathing suit. I've already had my first good burn for the season. If I had any doubts about wishing it was still cold, they are gone after this recent cold snap. Bring on the sun! Enjoy the pics.

Never Ending Weekend

This has been one of the longest weekends ever. Work has sucked the past 2 days and I still have one more shift to go before I get a couple of days off. Patients have been obnoxious, it's been busy, and my allergies are out of control. I have had several really interesting cases this week, but today I'm just hoping for slow and boring! Yes, I know, I'm whining.
In other news, I'm looking forward to going home to see my family next weekend for Easter. I haven't seen them since January and it will nice to be back "home" for a few days.

Tax Time

First, let me say that if I just finshed cleaning the bathroom (yes I'm aware that's midnight, but I'm not tired yet, so what's a girl to do?) and I inhailed way too many fumes from the cleaning supplies. So if this sounds like random jiberish, that's why. At least that's my excuse this time anyway!

So I finished doing my taxes today and offically filed them. It's nice to have that over with. I had been putting it off for quite a while. It really wasn't that bad though. I just had to make myself sit down with the huge stack of papers that is required to fill out all the forms and do it. And yes, I did it all myself. I did make a few phones calls to my dad just to verify that I had done things correctly and wasn't going to get in trouble with the government. I even did the whole itemized deduction thing this year. Now I can make plans for that refund check!
As for the picture, yeah it has nothing to do with this post at all, but I just wanted to include a picture and this is the one I chose. This photo is from Father's Day and it's the first picture of all 5 of us (plus Kaley) that we'd taken in a long time. For those of you who might can't tell who's who here's the order: me, Christine, Rebekah, Sarah, Kaley, and Elizabeth. (L to R)

Randomness

I haven't posted in a while mainly because my life has been pretty routine and there hasn't been much to comment on. I wouldn't want to deprive my "fans" for too long though, so I decided I'd slap some random things together to come up with a post. Work has been insane for the past month and it doesn't look like it's going to get better anytime soon. I saw 32 people in 12 hours the other day. I sewed 3 of them up, lanced a few of their abscesses, and x-rayed and splinted most of the rest of them, which makes for a really long shift. The flu is making a comeback, especially in kids, and the stomach virus that's been going around since Christmas is still hanging around. Surprisingly enough, I haven't anyone who's been afflicted with the Salmonella peanut butter yet. Of course, now that I've said that I'll probably see 20 people tomorrow that will swear it's the PB.
I borrowed the new Keith Urban CD from my friend Jenny yesterday, and I can't stop listening to it. You should check it out if you like, country and if you don't you should still give it a try. It has just the right balance of upbeat and slow songs, and they actually don't all sound the same. All things that are definitely a plus in my book. I also recently watched The Guardian, with Ashton Kutcher and Kevin Costner, and it's pretty good. It kept my attention and I'd probably watch it again.
I've been meaning to post these pictures for a while, but just haven't gotten around to it, so I thought I'd throw them in to spice up the post. So here they are:

Three Cheers for Walmart!

Today the new Walmart in Ooltewah opened, and I couldn't be happier. It's exactly 1.2 miles from my house, which may actually be a little too convinent. In case you were wondering, yes I've already visited it. It's fantastic. The aisle are wide enough that 2 carts can fit down them with room to spare. Everything is bright, open, well labeled, and organized in a way that actually makes sense. The only down side of the new store is no self check out lanes. I was a bit bummed about that since that's how I prefer to checkout.
I know that a lot of people out there hate Walmart, but I love it. It's capitalism at it's best. When a Walmart opens, it provided lots of jobs and enriches the local economy. I've heard the rumors that they don't always treat their employees well, but lets face it, there are plenty of companies that treat their employees like crap. Not that I think that's okay, I'm just saying. I love that I can get everything with one stop at a good price. I also think it's great that they honor advertisements from other stores. Plus there's the whole open 24 hours thing, which means when I get off work at 2am I can go grocery shopping if I want. Walmart can offer things and prices that no one else can because of their widespread success. For example their $4 generic prescription plan for people without insurance. How great is that?!?!? Because of this Walmart can drive market forces and help to lower the costs of medication across the board. It's exactly what healthcare needs. There's also talk of Walmart starting clinics in their stores which I'm personally all for. So Walmart will continue to get my business for now, at least until they open a Super Target in Ooltewah! :)

Monday....Finally

I thought Monday was never going to get here. I worked all this weekend and it felt like one big hellish shift. I think we treated every single person in this blasted city this weekend. At one point I saw 20 people in 6 hours, which is pretty impressive in the ER world. I'm just glad it's over. This past week I worked 72 hours so I plan on enjoying my days off. I had forgotten how bad the winter months are in the ER. It was like this last year when I first started and really didn't get better until April. The rooms stay full all the time and the waiting room is packed. It doesn't even die down in the middle of the night when normal people are sleeping. I must say that yesterday people were at least nice, even the ones that had been waiting forever. Saturday was another story, it was like people were competiting to see who could be the most hateful. It was a close race let me tell you. Oh well, as one of the nurses I work with says, they can only do it to you for 12 hours!

Merry Christmas

It's offically Christmas Eve, and I am off of work for 3 days! I'm going to crash for a few hours and then get up and drive to Johnson City so I can make it there in time to go to church with my family. Hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas!

Hair Cut

So I got my hair cut this weekend. It was no little trim either. I cut 9 1/2 inches off to donate to Beautiful Lengths. For those of you who have seen the link on my blog and wondered what it is, this is a program started by Pantene this summer to provide free wigs to women with cancer.
I had been planning to donate for a while now, but when one of my best friend's mom was diagnosed with breast cancer at the beginning of November, it became a little more personal. For me, it's a choice to cut my hair, for her it's not. So for anyone who might have some extra hair to spare (minimum donation is 8 inches), I encourage you to check out this site and considering donating. There are several similar groups that provides wigs for people with various conditions such as Locks of Love that provides wigs for kids with alopecia. I donated my hair to them in college (they require at least 10 inches).

Okay, here they are. In order to appease the masses, I'm posting pictures of myself with my hair cut.
I realize that by a lot of people's standards my hair is not that short, but for me it is. Especially since it was down to my butt before I cut it. I think the last time my hair was this short, I was in middle school.I like having short hair, although I'm still ending up with extra conditioner in my hand when I wash it! Guess, I'm still getting use to it. I also realized that's rather difficult to take a picture of yourself when you live alone!

Photo Op

Pictures always seem to be a hit and they allow others to see bits of our lives that sometimes can't be put into words. I personally love pictures: taking them, putting them in frames, scrapbooking with them, you name it. Some of my friends might say it's a bit of an obsession given the massive amount of albums and frames that have, but I think it's just a healthy habit. I finally got around to uploading some of my pictures off of my digital camera and onto my computer so I thought I'd post some of them for your viewing pleasure.

My sisters came to visit me in Chattanooga a couple of time this fall and on one of those trips, we ventured to the park. We had been shopping and this was the "bribe" that I promised to Kaley for being sweet while we were out. She loves being outside, so this worked out well. As you can tell, she loves the camera and is almost always willing to strike a pose.

My friend Mark, who I've known practically my whole life, got married this August (finally) in Nashville. It was a lot of fun to see some of the gang from high school/youth group. It definitely brought back some memories.

At the beginning of November, Leah and I flew to DC to surprise Jennifer for her 25th birthday. She had NO idea that we were coming, and her reaction was priceless. We had a lot of fun just hanging out and catching up.

Leah's Aunt has this awesome lake house in Alabama, where we spent the weekend this past September. It was the first time the 4 of us had all been together in a very long time. It was good to reconnect and enjoy the fellowship. Even after all these years we're still the best of friends.

Christmas Time

As I am sure you are all aware, today is December 1st, which to me means the offical start of the Christmas season. I know a lot of people put up trees and start playing Christmas music the day after Thanksgiving, but for me 25 days of the season are plenty so I hold off until December starts. I plan to get my tree today and decorate it. I'm excited about having a real tree this year. It seems like such a small thing, but I love that Christmas tree smell and due to fire codes in my apartment last year I couldn't have a real one and had to settle for pine sent from a candle. Not quite the same effect. So if the real tree causes a fire this year, I'll just have to count on the home owner's insurance because I'm having one. I personally don't see them as that big of a fire hazard. My family always has a real tree and we have left the lights on more times than I can possibly count and so far no fire. I must say the Christmas tree all ablaze does create an image that makes me chuckle a little. I know, I have a twisted sense of humor.
Christmas is probably my favorite holiday. I think I really realized this last year when I had to work and didn't get to celebrate with my family. I really missed the traditions that my family has. None of them are that big of a deal, just things like certain foods we always eat on Christmas Eve, the Christmas morning photo in which we all look like we just rolled out of bed (last years photo wins for the best in that category), going to my Granny's on Christmas day, the birthday cake we have for Jesus, and a few other little things. I even missed the Christmas breakfast casserole that I don't really like, but eat every year because it's tradition. The thing I missed the most was going to church on Christmas Eve. There's something about singing Silent Night with the lights out and candles lit, that makes me realize the true meaning of Christmas. I think this year Christmas means a little more to me because I missed out last year. In a way I'm glad I worked last year because it made me realize that for it really isn't about the presents and all that. It's the family traditions and being together that makes the holiday for me.

Mexico

I just got back from 8 incredible days in Mexico. I went to Tapachula with Global Health Outreach, which is part of the CMDA, to do Maxilofacial and GYN surgery. It was amazing. We were all able to use our God given talents to preform close to 75 surgerys in 5 days on people who otherwise would never had been able to afford these surgeries. The most touching cases for me were the cleft lip repairs that we did on the kids. The looks on the parents' faces when they saw their children after surgery was worth more than any words of thanks.
I still feel very overwelmed by all that I saw and the work that God did there in the people and most importantly in me. I hope to make short term missions a consistant part of my life. I'm already looking at going back next year. This trip also confirmed my love for surgery and being in the OR, which has left me with a lot of questions and decisions to make about my future over the next year or so. I pray that God will show me where to go and how to best use the talent and knowledge that He gave me.
I have tons of pictures and stories that I wll post in the next few days, but for now this all I can put into words.

LOST

And no, I'm not talking about the TV show. I'm talking about my luggage.
This past weekend I drove to Nashville and then flew to DC with my friend Leah to surprise our friend Jennifer for her 25th birthday. The flight up there was pretty good. Our connection in ATL was a little late leaving and we had to sit in a line of 9 planes before we finally took off, but other than that we had great timing and made it to Union Station without any major hangups. The surprise party went off without a hitch. Jennifer had no idea about the party, much less that Leah and I were coming. Her reaction was definitely one for the books. It was like in the movies, but better because it was real. It was however, captured on video so it can be re-lived over and over again, just like a movie.
The rest of the weekend was lots of fun, but was over way too soon. Sunday evening we board the plane at BWI and make the short flight into Philly. Now, the true adventure begins. First the plane is late leaving because we are waiting for some people on a connecting flight. Then, the little cart that has the belt that loads the luggage on to the plane breaks down and since it is parked behind the plane, we can't back out and leave. They get a bunch of guys to try and move it manually, but after several unsuccessful attempts, the wrecker is called. Once the cart it finally out of the way, we begin to taxi down the runway, only to end up sitting in another long line of planes. So about 1 1/2 hours after our original departure time, we finally make it into the air. We land in Nashville and head down to baggage claim. After what seems like an eternity, the bags finally start coming down the belt. Leah's bag comes out quite quickly and I foolish think mine will follow shortly. As more and more bags come out and mine is no where to be seen, I start to think the worst. My fears are confirmed a short while later when the last of the bags are spit out and we are left standing next to an empty belt. So I head over to the claim office and file my claim and then we head to Leah's. I'm pretty pissed at this point, not to mention tired. I mean our bags were checked together and load together, how did one make it and the other one not?!?!?! I've never had a problem when I flown before. I've never lost anything, never been stopped by security, never had my bag searched, and never been stopped but customs. I mean, I've never even set off the metal detector before. I guess there's a first time for everything though. I guess I tempted fate one to many times by making the "I've never" comments.
Fortunately, I got a call from the airline today and a courier delivered the bag to my house and it was waiting on my front porch when I got home from work tonight. Hopefully my flight to Mexico this weekend won't be as exciting, but after this adventure, I'm not holding my breath!

The Heat Man is My Hero

I have heat!!!!! The Heat/AC man came and did something that took about 2 minutes and now it's a lovely 68 in my house! No more purple hands. Sometimes it's the little things in life that make me smile.

Welcome to Siberia

That's about what it feels like in my house right now. Okay, maybe that's a bit of a stretch because it's 53 in here, but relatively speaking it feels REALLY cold. Especially to me because my hands and feet will turn blue/purple (literally) when the temperature is "normal", much less when it is cold. I've been so cold that when I take a shower the water burns my feet and I can't tell how warm it is because my skin is so cold. Also my shampoo is in this solid-gel like form due to the temp of the bathroom, which is probably the coldest room because it gets little sun light. Needless to say, my heat is not working. I actually found this out a week or so ago, but I was out of town for a week and then I've worked the past couple days so I haven't had a chance to do anything about it. A man is supposed to come and see about fixing it today and I am VERY happy about that. Until it gets fixed though, I have resorted to staying bundled up and drinking lots of coffee. I have also on occasion been using the oven as an alternate heat source.
On a completely different note, I feel the need to express my frustration with the drug companies. Yesterday, I found out the the manufactures of the medication that I have taken for my heart condition for the past 8 years has decided to stop making the strength that I take! So no more of this medication in generic of name brand. Why would someone all the sudden stop making something, when there is no substitute out there. So my cardiologist is trying me on a slightly different dose to see if that will work. I'm kind of freaked out though, cause it took a lot of work in the beginning to get this regulated and I worried that this won't work and my rhythm will get out of wack and I'll end up having runs of V-tach (which is a very bad thing for those you who aren't sure what that means.) Oh well, hopefully everything will be okay. So, there's my ranting for the day.

11 October 2006

What's wrong with people these days?

Today I was out doing some errands and I ended up behind this jeep wrangler that had several bumber stickers on it, and since we were at a red light, I took the time to read them. Normally I'm all for freedom of speech and can laugh at most things done in fun even if they aren't my specific opinions, but this one bumper stick was completely out of line. It read "I raised this thing (meaning the jeep obviously), because fat chicks can't climb." How horrible is that?!?!?!?!?! First, it's bad enough that some one would make something like that, but it's even worse that this guy chose to buy it and put it on his car for all to see. I mean there are some "offensive" bumper stickers out there, but most of them are in fun. I think this one crosses the line though. I know I seem rather worked up over a simple line on the back of some guy's car, but in a world where there is so much pressure to look a certain way and have a specific body type things like this only re-enforces that mindset.

I've Got Mail

I finally have a working a mail box!!!!!!!! This may seem like a very small thing and something that most of us don't think much about. However, since moving the beginning of July, I have not had a mail box. For the first month I was pretty understand since it was new construction and they had rushed getting my townhouse done so I could move in when I needed to. By the time August rolled I was starting to get pretty impatient. They finally put the posts up the beginning of September and assured me the boxes would be up in a few days, they just had to let the concrete dry for a couple of days. 2 weeks, still no box. Now, I don't really work concrete on a regular basis, but I'm pretty sure there aren't any kinds out there that take that long to dry! After a few more phone calls to the contractor, I had a mail box, but no numbers and since they want everything to be uniform, I had to wait for someone to put them up. Wednesday the numbers were finally up and today I walked to my own mailbox and got my mail for the first time in months!!!! No more trips to the post office to get the mail or mail a letter! (the post office only about 3 miles away, but still it was a pain to have to drive to get the mail)

Lawsuit Waiting to Happen

I learned this weekend that one of the bars/dance clubs here in Chattanooga, called the DRINK, has a swing that is 10 feet off the ground for patrons to "play on". Now let's think about this, a swing that high off the ground in a place where people consume alcohol, that's just asking for trouble. I mean drunk people can barely walk straight, how in the world are they supposed to hold on to a swing? You may be wondering how I happened along this interesting bit of information. A patient that I took care of this weekend was a victim of the swing. Her and her friend were swinging away when they lost their grip, falling backwards and hitting their heads. Naturally they were both rather intoxicated. My patient was fortunate enough to just end up with a huge gash in her head that required numerous stitches (it was quite cool actually you could lift her scalp up and everything and see the hair follicles on the underside of her scalp). Her friend however ended up with a bleed in her brain and was transfered to the trauma center. I never cease to be amazed by the things that I see in the ER.

Back in Action

I have been inspired to start blogging again after spending some time reading other people's blogs and catching up on the happenings in their lives. I realize that I miss ranting about things that bug me and logging events that happen to me. Even if no one reads my posts or comments on them, I enjoy reading back over them and remembering the funny and frustrating events that make up my life. So you may be wondering what I have I been up to since my last post, well sit back and enjoy because I'm going to tell you.

  • I finally finished unpacking all the boxes in my new house. Okay well technically I still have this one box down in the basement that has a bunch of random stuff in it that I can't figure out where to put.
  • Toby (my cocker spaniel) is getting quite big and while sometimes I get frustrated with him because he doesn't listen, I enjoy playing with him and I know he loves me.
  • I painted my kitchen red and I love it. I don't know why, but I've always wanted a red kitchen and having one makes me very happy.
  • I joined the library in Chattanooga and have started reading for fun again. Now I know this doesn't sound like a big deal, but I love to read, and having spent the past 5 years pretty much only reading stuff for school, it's nice to read things that I want to read.
  • I had another kidney stone. It stayed stuck in the same place for 3 1/2 weeks, so last friday I headed to the OR to have the stone lasered into a million pieces and have a stent placed. Not fun let me tell you, but I survived. The postive thing about all of it was my dad, 2 older sisters, and my niece came down to stay with me which was nice.
  • I continue to enjoy working in the ER most days. We have started this new thing where if people come for things that are not emegencies they have to pay for the visit. If they choose not to pay, then they leave with out getting treated and are supposed to follow up with their regular doctors. This means I get cussed out a little more than normal, but it makes things more interesting.

That's about all that comes to mind right now as "significant life events". Nothing too exciting, but sometimes that's nice.

TOBY

I got a new puppy today! He is a cocker spaniel and his name is Toby. I am very excited about finally getting a puppy. I am however, not excited about the fact that he has already peed and pooped on the carpet. Lucky both were discovered quickly. I am sure there will be many more accidents in the future, but we will be working towards being housebroken as soon as possible.

All Grown Up

That's right folks, I have offically entered the adult world. Today I made an offer on a townhouse and at the end of June will offically be a home owner. I feel so grown-up! I have a real job and a place that will truely be my own. Man, where does the time go? My townhouse is still in the construction phase, but once it gets closer to being finished, I will post pictures. I am very excited about it. And, if anyone has some spare time around the end of June, I can always use the extra hands to help move! :)

Perfect Day

Ever just have one of those perfect days? They don't come along very often and they should be relished when they do. Saturday was one of those days for me. I was in Nashville visiting my best friend Valerie. We slept in and then spent several hours hanging out at the park. The weather was perfect, there wasn't a cloud in the sky and it was the most awesome shade of blue. Later we went to hear some bluegrass music at the earthday celebration and ended the day with some awesome hispanic food at this crazy little place which was appropriately named 'Coco Locco'. While we didn't do anything really exciting, it was so nice just to enjoy being outside and being with friends.
